Your child is starting school – Language Delay/Disorder

Depositphotos_11619947_xsIt is a very exciting yet apprehensive time for many parents.  Your child, who has a language disorder is starting school.

As an experienced speech and language pathologist I find it useful to prepare my clients in a number of ways for their first experience at school.

The most important area I target is vocabulary. Vocabulary is the number of words that your child  uses and understands. Children with language disorders experience difficulty recalling and storing a complex vocabulary.

Prior to the commencement of school I target the vocabulary that the children will be using at school.  With language disordered children you just cannot assume they know the vocabulary even though they may have been exposed to it on a number of occasions.  Kids Language Resources has developed a great resource to assist parents in teaching school based vocabulary.

Working on school based vocabulary will assist your child in understanding and communicating better, faster in their new exciting environment.
