Thank you so much for the format. My son has a severe language disorder and was not diagnosed until aged 12. I have had severe difficulties trying to communicate his problem with his teachers. In fact, I now insist his Speech Therapist is involved in his initial meetings with his teachers because if I suggest a strategy it is often thought of as an overprotective mother, but if a Speech Therapist suggests the same strategy, it is more often listened to and used.

With no obvious sign of a disability, they are so often thought of as just lazy and 'stupid'.

Thank you

No problem Emma, I use this format for my son every year with his new teacher he is in primary school. It's really important to follow up with them as well to reiterate the strategies and face to face. Organise a meeting with a new teacher they appreciate it.

Not sure if you are subscribed? If not, you can subscribe top left hand of site above. Will give more information as I post it. Cheers Sandra :)

Thank you very much for publishing that, i am in the UK and my daughter (12) was diagnosed with APD early last year she has been put at the front of the class, how ever teachers still seem to not want to assist her in any other way, she stuggles with writing down homework (she is also dyslexic) so only puts about 3 words in her homework diary then doesnt have a clue what is expected of her, this is despite me writing a letter in her home/school diary to all teachers. Maybe this sort of letter will help get across to teachers the extra support she needs.
Thank you

Comment on Speech or Language Delay what’s the difference? by aideen

Hi! just to clarify a speech delay is when language is developing in the usual way but there is a lag for one reason or another and it's all happening a little later than usual ...it is delayed. Usualy children with a language delay develop normal language skills but the delay may mena that they find it difficult to understand or express as would be expected for their age, which has major implication for making progressin school where much of the learning is through talk.

A language disorder is different to a delay. With a language disorder some aspect of language development is not happening in the usual way. There are various types of disorder and generally they are more difficult to overcome than a speech delay.

Often we think that speech therapy is to remediate the child's "speech" -as in their ability to make certain sounds correctly -like an "r" sound or an "s" sound for example. Speech theripists do work on sounds but also work on understanding language concepts, recpetive language skills, vocabulary and expressive language too!

I would definately advise anyone with concerns to have their child's language checked out. The earlier you know what's going on the earlier you can addres it and get to work on fixing it!! There can be long waiting lists and by time you get the help your child needs there might be a much bigger gap between what you'd expect and where your child is with their language. People will tell you boys are slower to talk, 2nd children are slower to talk, it's because he speaks a 2nd language -these things make a bit of a difference as does their verbal intelligence...everyone likes to reassure you, but get it checked out if he doen't seemt o be doing as well as your other children/his peers.

Hi Kimberley, It sounds like you are in the USA. I am based in Australia so not familiar with TAPS? You may need to review with a speech pathologist more local. I have in the past had all testing for my son done independently as well as with the school. Also if I waited for the education system to get the testing done it would be a long wait. Via doctor's and pediatrician referrals my son was diagnosed. Hope this helps - good luck! Cheers Sandra

I have been diagosised w/ APD in college years ago. Now my 7yr. old exibits the samne symptoms but much worse. I am having a dificult time navigaing the school. They finally have agreed to administer TAPS. Can you tell me if this is sufficient in itself and should it be done independently or is the school ok?

Maleshia,

Thanks for your positive comments. I hope that working through some of this vocabulary helps your son.

In regards to questions from my experience children often do not understand the difference between the various question types. For example they are unable to understand the difference between what, where, who, when and why questions. Often children answer a who question with a where answer, etc.

It would be very helpful to drill each of these question types separately. Kids Language Resources has great activities to teach each of these question types and they are also presented in developmental order, which will enable you to teach the easiest to the hardest.

Hope this helps

Thanks for this!!! My son is 4 years and 8 months old and I just recently had a neuro psych evaluation done on him and was told that he is "delayed" in both receptive and expressive language skills. I am so worried about my little guy starting kindergarten in the fall even though, academically, he is where he is supposed to be. I will take note of this post and work on his vocabulary first.

His main problem is questions. He has come a long way and is getting better but this is everyone's greatest concerns. Sometimes when you ask him questions, it seems as though he says whatever is at the top of his head instead of anything that resembles an appropriate response. Is there anything in particular that you would recommend I use to help him in this area? Thanks !!1
